A rare opportunity to explore the historic Governor’s House at Omagh Gaol
The historic Governor’s House at Omagh Gaol is currently undergoing an important programme of restoration. As part of European Heritage Open Days, members of the public are invited to step inside this fascinating building and see the restoration work first-hand.
Visitors will have the opportunity to hear from the current owner Mr Hamill, and local historian Dr Johnny Hamill, who will share stories of the Governor’s House and Omagh Gaol and their place in the history of the town throughout the 1800s.
From the architecture and restoration challenges to the people who lived and worked within the gaol, this is a chance to discover a fascinating and little-seen part of Omagh’s past.
Come along, look around, ask questions and discover the story behind the building — before its next chapter begins.
Whether you have a passion for local history, historic buildings, architecture, or simply enjoy discovering places that are normally closed to the public, this is a unique opportunity to see the Governor’s House for yourself and learn more about the ongoing effort to preserve it for future generations.

This grade A listed historical site is under renovation; suitable footwear is recommended for the uneven ground and steep steps.
