Mendelssohn Hebrides Overture
Sinding Suite in the Old Style
Grieg Selections from Holberg Suite
Mendelssohn Symphony No.3 Scottish
Conductor Rolf Verbeek Violin Gongbo Jiang
Felix Mendelssohn fell head over heels for Scotland during a holiday there and the musical inspiration the trip unlocked resulted in two of his best-known and best-loved works, the Hebrides Overture and his Third Symphony, nicknamed the Scottish. From his depiction of the sea around the coast to the atmospheric ruins of the Palace of Holyrood – and even a bit of Hibernian thunder – these pieces evocatively depict the dramatic scenery of Scotland.
We’ll also travel from the Scottish Highlands to the Norwegian Fjords. Grieg’s Holberg Suite is elegant, dancing and utterly delightful, while Ulster Orchestra violin section leader Gongbo Jiang takes centre stage as soloist in Christian Sinding’s lyrical and charming Suite in the Old Style.
