Found and Ground – making your own experimental foraged paints and materials with Helen Bullock McFarland

In this workshop led by artist Helen Bullock McFarland, you will discover how natural colours can be extracted from plant materials, lichen, wood bark, berries and many other materials.

Certain variables in each plant structure make it reliable and lightfast or fugitive.

In this practical class, you will be creating inks and pigments to discover a sustainable, earth friendly practice. Historical and traditional non-toxic ink recipes will be shared, as well as what to forage for your own experimental recipes.

All essential materials will be provided, though you may wish to bring along your own preferred paint brushes, sketchbooks and aprons.

This class is intended as a starting point for your own experiments in sustainable art based on ever growing intimacy with the landscape.
